Breath as Tool: and Why it Matters
The breath is one of the most direct ways to influence the autonomic nervous system, which regulates stress and recovery in the body.
When breathing becomes fast and shallow, the body shifts into a sympathetic (“fight or flight”) state, leading to increased heart rate, muscle tension, and heightened stress. When breathing slows, the opposite occurs—heart rate decreases, relaxation increases, and the body moves into a parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) state that supports recovery.
Why Stretching Doesn’t Always Relieve Muscle Tension
Muscle tension is often treated as a mechanical issue, addressed through stretching and mobility work. However, current research in motor control and neuroscience suggests that tension is frequently a product of nervous system regulation rather than tissue limitation. The body adjusts muscle stiffness in response to perceived threat, load, or uncertainty, prioritising stability over range of motion.
Burnout in Hospitality
Burnout is increasingly recognised as a global occupational phenomenon. The World Health Organisation defines burnout as a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.
While burnout can affect any profession, hospitality workers are uniquely exposed due to the combination of physical demands, emotional labour, and unpredictable schedules.
